atNorth Spearheads Nordic Data Centre Heat Reuse
Nordic standout for colocation, AI and high-performance computing, atNorth, mammoth data centre project in Ølgod, Denmark is set to open in 2025.
Known as DEN02, this facility is prepped for colocation and bespoke initiatives, perfectly catering to the hyperscalers and enterprises diving deep into AI and high-performance computing domains.
The unveiling of DEN02, which joins the ranks following DEN01 near Ballerup with a robust 30MW capacity, sets a new benchmark for atNorth in Denmark.
Towards a greener future with atNorth and Wa3rm
As a vanguard in the data centre realm, atNorth amplifies its footprint globally, putting a spotlight on the Nordic territories.
A significant step in this strategic expansion is its ventures in Finland, underpinning the surging demands for eco-friendly, high-performance frameworks. With two operational and two forthcoming sites - FIN02 in Helsinki and the gigantic FIN04 in Kouvola, atNorth has also clinched a nomination at the prestigious Electrical Review & Data Centre Review Awards.
The DEN02 campus, sprawling over 174 hectares and located a stone's throw from Billund Airport, is poised for an initial output of 250MW, with ambitions to scale significantly.
The modular construction approach of atNorth, coupled with the site's prime connectivity thanks to trans-Atlantic fibre cables' proximity, sets DEN02 apart.
Enter Wa3rm, a titan in circular and bio-based ecosystems for waste management, which is joining forces with atNorth. This partnership is set to revolutionise heat recycling from the DEN02 campus for large greenhouse operations and community heating solutions, proving atNorth's commitment to a carbon-neutral footprint.
Cohesively aligning with Denmark's 2050 vision for a low-carbon, fossil fuel-independent society, atNorth envisions powering DEN02 with surrounding renewable energy farms.
Blueprints for a sustainable future
atNorth’s CEO, Eyjolfur Magnus Kristinsson shared that the DEN02 site is a blueprint for future data centres.
“The highly energy efficient design, including its state-of-the-art heat reuse technologies, coupled with the advantageous location in Denmark and our dedication to sustainability, exemplifies innovation in our industry,” he said. “It will be an ideal location for hyperscalers and AI businesses looking to decarbonise their high-performance workloads.”
Jacques Ejlerskov, CEO at Wa3rm, said that the company was delighted to partner with atNorth in a shared commitment to a circular economy.
“State-of-the-art data centres such as DEN02 have the ability to significantly contribute to increased circularity through re-use of resources such as excess heat and with atNorth we have found a partner that shares our vision of ‘bringing waste to life’.”
“Denmark presents an opportunity for businesses to flourish with its collaborative community that supports innovation, attracts talent and fosters a sustainable growth mindset,” added Vanessa Vega Saenz, Director of Invest in Denmark. “With its strong focus on sector integration atNorth can play a key role in the further development of sustainable hyperscale data centres.”
