Huawei unveils suite of power and oil sector solutions as part of broader push into industrial automation and artificial intelligence infrastructure

Telecommunications and technology company Huawei has launched a series of digital transformation tools aimed at energy and industrial companies at GITEX Global 2024 in Dubai, including new solutions for power distribution and oil field operations.

The company, which provides telecommunications equipment and enterprise technology solutions, showcased its industrial automation technology in a busy week at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 14-18.

Digital infrastructure push

Huawei’s expansion into industrial automation comes as energy companies seek to integrate artificial intelligence and 5G-Advanced networks – the latest iteration of cellular technology offering enhanced machine-to-machine communication – into their operations.

Li Peng, Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service at Huawei, says the company is combining its capabilities in networking, storage, computing and cloud services to develop new digital infrastructure. “We have summarised over 100 case studies that different industry customers can use to accelerate their digital and intelligent transformation,” he said.

The company has established 14 technology development centres, which it calls OpenLabs, to support joint innovation with local solution providers. In the UAE alone, Huawei reports working with more than 30 partners to develop 20 solutions for local industry requirements.

Applications in the energy sector

Among the new offerings is an Intelligent Distribution Solution for power utilities, designed to automate electricity grid management, and an Intelligent Oil & Gas Field Solution that incorporates machine learning for upstream operations.

The company has developed a Global Digital Index with research firm IDC to provide quantitative evaluation indicators for industrial transformation projects. This comes as part of a broader initiative to support companies in building what Huawei terms “AI-ready ICT infrastructure.”

David Shi, Vice President of ICT Marketing and Solution Sales at Huawei, says the company is focusing on making industrial technology infrastructure more accessible. “Only by working closely with our customers and partners can we truly bring intelligence to all industries,” he said.

The solutions are part of a broader portfolio that includes data storage systems and cloud computing services designed for industrial applications. Leo Chen, Corporate Senior Vice President and President of Enterprise Sales at Huawei, said artificial intelligence and advanced cellular networks are driving industrial transformation.

Technology integration

Huawei's exhibition at GITEX demonstrates the integration of intelligent technology across multiple sectors, with dedicated spaces showing applications in public utilities, finance, transportation, and energy.

The company has published a white paper titled "Amplifying Industrial Digitalization & Intelligence Practice," which includes implementation cases from more than 20 industries. This forms part of what the company describes as its reference architecture for intelligent transformation.

Huawei said it is also working to expand its network of technology integration partners through what it calls the SHAPE framework, which provides support for joint innovation and capability development.

The framework focuses on sustaining technology leadership, advancing partner capability development and expanding growth opportunities. This includes streamlined deal registration processes and a comprehensive training system for partners.

Ernest Zhang, President of Global Partner, Commercial & Distribution, Enterprise Sales at Huawei, says: “Collaborating with Huawei means more growth opportunities, higher operation efficiency, greater business margin and stronger AI-ready capability.”
