The alliance aims to merge SLB's expertise in cloud and edge technologies with Palo Alto Networks' cybersecurity solutions
SLB and Palo Alto Networks unite to tackle rising cyber threats, merging cloud expertise and AI-driven cybersecurity solutions to secure the energy sector

Palo Alto Networks and SLB, two powerhouses in their respective fields, have formed a pivotal alliance to safeguard the energy sector from escalating cyber threats.

The collaboration is set to combine SLB’s deep expertise in cloud and edge technologies with Palo Alto Networks' advanced cybersecurity solutions. This move is a direct response to the energy industry’s growing reliance on digital technologies and the corresponding increase in cyber risks.

Tackling cybersecurity in the energy sector

“The maturation of our industry's digital transformation makes cybersecurity paramount to our operations and the digital solutions we offer to our customers,” said Olivier Le Peuch, CEO of SLB.

The energy sector has become a prime target for cyberattacks, with a staggering 264% increase in incidents over the last two years, as reported by Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42.

Legacy operational technology systems and the complexity of the industry’s infrastructure, combined with the critical nature of energy production, make it an attractive target for malicious actors.

Confronting the threat landscape

The growing adoption of digital solutions in the energy sector, including cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, has significantly expanded the industry's attack surface. This development has led to a surge in threats such as malware, phishing, and ransomware, as noted in a recent report by IT consultancy Thales. Notably, nearly a quarter of energy sector respondents have experienced a ransomware attack in the past year.

Recognising these challenges, SLB has chosen to integrate Palo Alto Networks' AI-driven cybersecurity platforms into its technology infrastructure. This includes key solutions like Prisma SASE, Prisma Cloud, and Cortex XSIAM, designed to provide robust security across SLB's network, cloud and edge platforms. This integration will enable SLB’s Delfi digital platform users to collaborate securely, safeguarding critical operations.

Nikesh Arora, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Palo Alto Networks, praised SLB’s proactive stance.

"Palo Alto Networks commends SLB for their forward-looking approach in shaping the future of the energy industry through secure and innovative solutions," he said. "Their vision for modern IT transformation through platformisation aligns with our own commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure and driving technological advancement."

Securing energy for a digital future

While this partnership marks a significant advance in protecting the digital transformation of the energy sector, a comprehensive approach remains essential. The global political climate has heightened the risk, with state actors increasingly targeting critical infrastructure through cyberattacks.

IT security company Imperva recently highlighted a 548% increase in application layer DDoS attacks aimed at telecom and ISP sectors.

This growing threat has prompted governmental responses, such as President Biden's focus on the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure, including water supply systems. The collaboration between SLB and Palo Alto Networks reflects the industry’s commitment to addressing these risks head-on and securing the future of energy in an increasingly digital world.

To stay ahead of the rising tide of cyber threats, continued collaboration between government and enterprise is crucial. The joint efforts of SLB and Palo Alto Networks demonstrate a proactive approach to meeting the challenges of cybersecurity, ensuring that the energy sector remains resilient in the face of an evolving digital landscape.
