The UK Government’s £22bn commitment to net zero has sparked investment in clean energy projects from companies including Ørsted, Greenvolt & Iberdrola

The government's recent commitment of £22bn to carbon capture initiatives has greatly accelerated private investment in sustainable energy.

This move strengthens the UK's presence in global sustainable finance and has triggered substantial international capital inflow, as identified by research firm Verdantix.

Fostering European investment in the UK

The cascade of investments, particularly in renewable energy, following the UK's policy announcement is significant.

Danish powerhouse Ørsted and Portuguese company Greenvolt have respectively committed US$10bn and US$3.1bn to offshore wind energy projects. The details of these commitments signal the key role of proactive government policies in attracting high-value private investments to the green market.

Similarly, Spanish energy conglomerate Iberdrola has revealed a US$30bn injection into renewable energy across the UK, doubling previous investments.

Iberdrola Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán says: “After having invested more than £30bn in the last 15 years, the clear policy direction, stable regulatory frameworks and overall attractiveness of the UK are leading us to double our investments for 2024 to 2028, reaching up to £24bn.

“This is a vote of confidence in the UK’s clear and stable policies and is a major boost to the economy and the path towards green energy security and net zero. The benefits of electrification in terms of energy security, industrial development, jobs and decarbonisation are shared ambitions of the UK and Iberdrola.”

These projects will expand the current scope of infrastructure by involving the construction of high-voltage cables and new wind farms, thus enhancing the nation's renewable capability significantly.

Global impacts and financial influences

The positive repercussions of the UK’s strategic focus on green investments go beyond local benefits and are setting a global standard.

“The implications of these investments extend beyond the UK,” says Isobel McPartlin, Analyst at Verdantix.

“Successful projects could serve as a model for other countries, inspiring similar commitments and potentially leading to a ripple effect in international markets.

“There is precedent for this, with the German government’s Energiewende initiative helping private capital investments in green energy technologies grow by 35% in 2019-2020. Increased investment in the UK has similarly attracted global investors seeking stable opportunities in clean energy, shifting capital flows towards renewable projects worldwide – particularly in emerging markets.”

In parallel, financial institutions are also upscaling their role in the transition to a greener economy. The City of London Corporation and Climate Policy Initiative recently highlighted that UK-based financial institutions are now significantly increasing their funding into clean energy, with investments nearing US$2.3bn this year. This marks the swiftest growth among global financial centres, reflecting a growing commitment to investment transparency and net zero targets.

“Too many governments and companies still think that climate risk is a problem for the 2030s or beyond,” believes David Metcalfe, CEO and Co-founder of Verdantix.

While the UK is indeed leading with robust policies and substantial financial injections into green projects, maintaining this momentum will be crucial for sustaining long-term environmental and economic health.

As Verdantix investigates these evolving trends, the company's insights continue to influence strategic investments and policy formulations within the UK and beyond.
