Michael O'Connell, Chief Analytics Officer at Spotfire, on his journey to technology leadership in energy management

Michael O’Connell is a leader who embodies data science and analytics innovation as the Chief Analytics Officer at Spotfire, a role that is as expansive as it is foundational.

“Chief Analytics Officer is really a front-foot offensive position,” Michael explains. With a storied career bridging multiple industries and eras of digital transformation, Michael’s impact is visible not only in Spotfire’s product evolution but also in the way enterprises leverage advanced analytics in the energy sector and beyond.

Michael’s academic roots run deep in statistical and computational rigor. “I did a first degree in science with a focus on mathematical statistics and biology, did a Master's degree in statistics and then came to the US from Australia to do a PhD in statistics with a minor in mathematics. My dissertation was around computational stats,” he recalls. This strong foundation in statistics provided the backbone for a career that has spanned research and development in medical devices, diagnostics and manufacturing before pivoting into software and analytics.

His early professional journey was shaped by hands-on roles in biostatistics and R&D, quickly expanding into the nascent field of microarray analysis in the 1990s. “Then the internet came along and I started building apps for my employer,” he reminisces. This momentum carried him into a patient remote care startup, clinical trials and, eventually, a partnership – and subsequent acquisition – by Spotfire within TIBCO.

At Spotfire, Michael’s remit is sweeping. He manages a sizable and diverse team – data scientists, architects, support and customer success functions – all contributing to what he describes as the “field technology group in the Spotfire business.” His leadership style is notably hands-on. “I really love speaking with customers and getting inspired and building things. And then I've got all the technical work and the thought leader work on top of that,” he shares. The strength of his team is a consistent thread: “I’ve always had a data science team and they’re the best. Those experts, the ultimate hackers of making something happen with Spotfire.”

That hacker mentality – of finding a way no matter the challenge – feeds directly into Spotfire’s culture of innovation. “With Spotfire, we say there’s always a way, we’ll make it happen. People hack their way to something and then that becomes a solution and ultimately makes its way into the product,” Michael says.

However, leading at this pace is not without its challenges. “My biggest challenge, emotionally, is slowing down,” he acknowledges. “My dad used to say, slow down, smell the roses a little bit.”

He also imparts practical lessons drawn from personal experience. One memorable piece of advice from early in his career was to “master the sandwich” – a pragmatic approach to effective collaboration: “If you want someone to collaborate or do something, you’ve got to put a nice layer of bread there and appeal to your friendship. Then you put the bit in the middle that you want to get done with them and then you put another nice layer of bread on the bottom saying, ‘let's get together in the future’.” Michael underscores that effective leadership involves empathy, context and keeping a broad perspective – summed up in the mantra, “be the giraffe and not the jackal.”

He explains: “Don’t fight it out on the forest floor, stay above it and try and provide a meta view of the work progress or the project.”

From academia to industry, through the dawn of the internet and into the age of generative AI, Michael epitomises the evolution of analytics leadership – a role that blends curiosity, technical depth, teamwork and a relentless drive to turn challenges into opportunities.
