Reforestation is one of a host of nature-based solutions
At Sustainability LIVE NYC, experts discuss how nature-based solutions like reforestation and wetlands aid decarbonisation across the global energy sector

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are integral to addressing contemporary environmental challenges, leveraging natural ecosystems to tackle issues like climate change, biodiversity decline and disaster risks.

These solutions focus on strengthening and collaborating with natural landscapes, such as forests, wetlands and urban green spaces, rather than relying solely on technological interventions.

NBS will be the subject of a high-level discussion at Sustainability LIVE: Climate Week NYC, set for 22 September 2025 at Convene, 360 Madison Avenue, New York.

Utilising nature for environmental benefits

The ways to employ the natural world for environmental gain are extensive.

For instance, restoring mangroves shields coastal areas from storm surges while storing carbon.

Similarly, reforestation and agricultural practices focused on regeneration capture carbon emissions and enhance soil health.

In urban settings, green roofs offer a cooling effect, improve air quality and help in rainwater management.

According to the United Nations and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), NBS are cost-effective, adaptable and resilient strategies that benefit both people and nature.

They are increasingly essential in corporate and governmental climate strategies, providing multiple benefits: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aiding communities in adapting to climate effects and boosting biodiversity.
