TotalEnergies is partnering with Aljomaih Energy & Water in a 25-year power purchase agreement on a 400 MW Saudi Arabian solar plant to power 68,400 homes

TotalEnergies has set a target to cut 40% of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions from operated facilities by 2030.

Clean energy development could help to meet these goals.

The energy company, together with Saudi developer Aljomaih Energy & Water (AEW), has secured rights to develop, construct and run a 400 MW solar facility in As Sufun, Saudi Arabia.

The partnership represents the consortium's second successful bid within Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program.

Saudi Arabia's solar infrastructure expansion

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) granted the licence to operate the solar installation, which could provide electricity to more than 68,400 households.

Generated power will be purchased by SPPC under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) following grid connection in 2027.

This initiative forms part of Round 6 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), which operates under the Ministry of Energy's supervision.

The NREP seeks to decrease dependence on liquid fuels for electricity generation, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030.

This national framework aims to increase installed capacity shares from renewable sources and energy storage systems to reach up to 50% by 2030, contingent on electricity demand growth.

“Together with our partner Aljomaih Energy and Water Co, we are thrilled to contribute to Saudi Arabia's target of increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix,” says Olivier Jouny, SVP Renewables at TotalEnergies.

“This project marks the second success for our consortium in the Saudi National Renewable Energy Program.

“TotalEnergies is a close partner of Saudi Arabia, where we are deploying our multi-energy strategy, notably through our participation in major refining and petrochemical assets.”

Investment in green energy

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) could play a major role in shaping the Kingdom's renewable trajectory.

The fund sits at the centre of Saudi Arabia's environmental objectives, managing an extensive portfolio of sustainable investments.

By mid-2024, PIF had allocated US$19.4bn to green initiatives, with US$5.2bn distributed across renewable energy, sustainable water management, pollution control and green buildings, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“The 400 MW As Sufun Solar PV Project in Hail region demonstrates our ongoing efforts to expand our renewable energy investments in the Kingdom,” says Eng. Adnan Buhuligah, Acting CEO of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company.

“The project will supply clean energy to more than 68,400 households, underscoring our role in supporting the Saudi’s Vision 2030 objectives toward a thriving and sustainable economy.”

PIF is driving development of 70% of the Kingdom's renewable energy infrastructure, supporting the target of 50% renewables in the national energy mix by 2030.

The fund has also issued what could be the world's first 100-year green bond and operates under a Green Finance Framework.

TotalEnergies' multi-energy strategy

TotalEnergies maintains oil and gas as fundamental components of its business while growing its renewable operations.

In 2024 it invested nearly US$5bn in low-carbon energy, including US$4bn in electricity assets.

“We are proud to lead the development of the 400 MW As Sufun Solar PV Project in partnership with TotalEnergies,” says Mr. Ibrahim Aljomaih, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company.

“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting the Saudi Green Initiative and advancing the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

“Through our deep local expertise and trusted international partnerships, we continue to contribute to the Kingdom’s energy transition toward a more sustainable future.

“We also extend our sincere appreciation to SPPC for their continued trust and cooperation.”
