DP World's Carbon Inset Programme is advancing sustainable logistics, promoting cleaner energy use with more than 100,000 containers registered

DP World is at the forefront of transforming global trade, focusing on sustainability and efficiency.

Operating across six continents with a workforce exceeding 100,000, DP World provides comprehensive supply chain solutions.

This includes ports, terminals, marine services, logistics and innovative technology.

In the UK, DP World has committed more than ÂŁ5bn ($6.2bn), establishing an integrated logistical network.

This network comprises two deep-sea port terminals at London Gateway and Southampton, an expanding logistics division, technology for customs clearance, and a key ferry operating company.

The latest stride in sustainability from DP World is the Carbon Inset Programme, which after launching in December 2024 and starting a six-month trial in January, has quickly gained traction.

In just two months, more than 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of import-laden containers have been registered by cargo owners.

This programme offers a novel approach to emissions reduction by rewarding importers.

Importers participating receive 50kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) credits for each loaded container handled through London Gateway and Southampton.

Should half of all importers participate, the initiative could slash more than 10,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases from supply chains.

A greener approach to supply chain logistics

“At DP World we are committed to innovation and offering our customers transparent and pragmatic solutions that help them achieve their sustainability goals," comments John Trenchard, Vice President of Commercial & Supply Chain at DP World in the UK.

"Through our revolutionary Carbon Inset Programme, we are working with partners in the DP World group to build on what we have already achieved with our Modal Shift Programme, which reduced the carbon emissions of our customers by more than 17,000 tonnes in its first year.

"We have already seen a surge in sign-ups to the Carbon Inset Programme, putting this programme on the course to success.”

DP World's sustainability strategy includes ambitious goals to cut absolute emissions by 42% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

The Carbon Inset Programme is a critical part of this journey, enabling companies to lessen their carbon footprint while demonstrating real progress towards ecological targets.

Carbon credits and lower-emission fuels

In the essence of the Carbon Inset Programme lies the role of DP World's subsidiary, Unifeeder.

This subsidiary generates carbon credits by utilising lower-emission fuels across its Northern European shipping routes.

These credits are independently verified and accumulated quarterly, allowing companies to visibly enhance their sustainability profiles and satisfy increasingly stringent emissions regulations. This approach not only aids businesses in lowering their Scope 3 emissions — those indirectly created through supply chain activities — but also provides a structured avenue for companies aiming to uphold their sustainability pledges in a measurable, verifiable manner.

An expanding global supply chain network

Alongside focusing on carbon reduction, DP World continuously broadens its supply chain capabilities.

Operating in 78 countries and catering to about 10% of global trade, the company is enhancing the way goods are moved by seamlessly connecting logistics, forwarding and transport services across its vast global network.

This comprehensive network enables businesses to transport goods more effectively, leveraging DP World's advanced sustainability drives.

As the complexity of global supply chains intensifies, initiatives like the Carbon Inset Programme underscore how logistics companies can assist businesses in effectively managing environmental challenges, all whilst maintaining operational efficiency and reliability.
