F1 and DHL Drive Emissions Reduction On and Off the Track
Formula 1 (F1), famous for speed and performance, is continuing to make strides in sustainability.
The sport is working to shed its fuel-hungry reputation and become a leader in eco-conscious motorsport, aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Sustainable logistics with F1 and DHL
Beyond its high-speed cars, F1 is advancing sustainability through its long-standing partnership with DHL. This collaboration is revolutionising motorsport logistics.
For the 2024 season, DHL has doubled its fleet of biofuel-powered trucks to 37, helping reduce carbon emissions during F1’s European races.
These trucks, running on HVO100 drop-in fuel, cut emissions by 83% compared to diesel alternatives.
In addition, DHL’s GoGreen Plus initiative will see a fifth of F1’s cargo flights outside Europe use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
This shift, starting after the Singapore Grand Prix, will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% per flight compared to conventional fuel.
”Formula 1 has always been at the forefront of innovation and our early stage investment in sustainable aviation fuel is a testament to our dedication to deliver on our net zero by 2030 commitment”, Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1 said.
“SAF is just the latest step for the business, and underscores how alternative fuels both on and off track can materially reduce carbon emissions. This delivery of our sustainability strategy is only made possible through coordinated actions across our sport.”
The introduction of SAF for cargo flights and the use of biofuels for trucks show F1’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint.
Beyond fuel, F1 and DHL are working to streamline logistics. This includes deploying fuel-efficient Boeing 777 aircraft, which reduce emissions by 17%, and optimising race calendars for more efficient travel routes.
F1 and DHL: Two decades of innovation
DHL and F1’s partnership spans more than 20 years, built on shared goals of innovation and sustainability.
Paul Fowler, Head of DHL Motorsports Logistics, added: “Our longstanding partnership with Formula 1 is built on a shared passion for innovation and excellence.
“We are committed to using our expertise to support Formula 1 in transporting cars and other equipment around the world in the most efficient way possible.
“With 40 years of expertise in motorsports logistics, we are focused on identifying ways to cut down greenhouse gas emissions and making motorsport more sustainable with every step we take.”
Together, F1 and DHL have introduced solutions like remote broadcasting operations, reducing freight volumes and increasing logistical efficiency. By continually innovating and focusing on alternative fuels, the two are proving that even the fastest sport in the world can lower its environmental impact while maintaining high performance.
Through these efforts, F1 is not just a motorsport leader but is also setting the pace for sustainability in global events.
