Meta and Sage Geosystems partner to deliver 150 MW of geothermal power
Meta and Sage Geosystems have partnered to deliver 150 MW of geothermal power, to meet the need of the expanding data centre sector

Sage Geosystems and Meta Platforms have shared the news of an agreement to expand geothermal power in the USA. This is a demonstration of the critical role clean, firm and resilient power plays in meeting the electricity demand from the technology sector. As companies seek to utilise AI and cloud computing technologies, power demand from data centres has grown dramatically.

The amount of data centre supply currently under construction in North America has grown by 69% in one year. Reaching 3.9 gigawatts (GW), research from CBRE Group has found that under-construction activity in primary markets has dramatically increased. However, a shortage of available power and longer lead times for electrical infrastructure, has continued to cause delays to construction projects.

Meta & Sage to deliver 150 MW of geothermal energy 

Executives from both Sage and Meta met with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy, David Turk, as well as members of the Biden-Harris Administration, investors and energy stakeholders. They discussed the merits of geothermal energy as a growing carbon-free energy source for the US technology sector. To support Meta’s data centre growth, this partnership will deliver 150 MW of new geothermal baseload power.

The partnership builds on the support for geothermal energy as a renewable energy source. Sage will utilise its proprietary Geopressured Geothermal System (GGS) to provide carbon-free power to Meta’s data centres.

Clean geothermal energy for a sustainable future

This partnership is a big step forward in sustainable energy, reinforcing Sage’s role as a leader in the geothermal revolution and Meta’s dedication to leading clean energy initiatives. The first phase of this sustainable project will aim to be online and operating by 2027.

“Meta thanks the Department of Energy’s leadership on promoting and supporting the exploration of new energy sources like geothermal,” said Urvi Parekh, Head of Renewable Energy at Meta. “That leadership supports Meta’s goal to enable the addition of reliable, affordable, and carbon-free power to the grid with this geothermal energy deal. We are excited to partner with such an innovative company like Sage Geosystems that is a proven leader in geothermal development on this project and beyond.”

Cindy Taff, CEO of Sage Geosystems, said that this announcement is the perfect example of how the public and private sector can work together to make the clean energy transition a reality.

As the US economy grows, the manufacturing sector booms, shared David Turk, U.S. Energy Deputy Secretary. He also said that this is due to the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, which has allowed new industries, such as AI, to grow.

“The Administration views this increased demand as a huge opportunity to add more clean, firm power to the grid and geothermal energy is a game-changer as we work to grow our clean power supply,” he added.
