Tata Motors Leads with First Hydrogen Truck Trials in India

Tata Motors, the leading commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, is paving the way towards achieving the country's net-zero emissions target by 2070 through its inaugural trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks.
This trailblazing initiative signals a pivotal development in the realm of electric and alternative fuel technologies in India's automotive sector, heralding a new era of sustainable automotive manufacturing.
Government endorsement fuels green innovation
The trials of these hydrogen-powered truck trials by Tata Motors marks a significant advancement in sustainable practices within the nationâs commercial vehicle industry.
The trial was officially inaugurated by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Honâble Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, and Shri Pralhad Joshi, Honâble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, with Tata Motorsâ Executive Director Girish Wagh also in attendance alongside key government and industry representatives.
Supported financially by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this project underlines the government's dedication to fostering the adoption of green fuel technologies in both manufacturing and logistics sectors.
Tata Motors won the bid to undertake this landmark trial, which aims to evaluate the practicality and efficiency of hydrogen-powered vehicles for long-haul transportation.
âHydrogen is the fuel of the future with immense potential to transform Indiaâs transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance," says Shri Nitin Gadkari.
"Such Initiatives will accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility in heavy-duty trucking, and move us closer to an efficient, low-carbon future.
"I congratulate Tata Motors for taking the lead in this significant step towards enabling hydrogen-powered green and smart transportation.â
Shri Pralhad Joshi adds: âHydrogen is an important fuel for Indiaâs transition to a sustainable and zero-carbon future.
"The beginning of this trial is a significant step forward in showcasing the potential of green hydrogen in decarbonisng Indiaâs transportation sector.
"This initiative, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, reflects our commitment to driving innovation and achieving Indiaâs energy independence while contributing to global climate goals. I applaud Tata Motors for taking the lead in this pioneering effort.â
Driving sustainable automotive development
Over the next 24 months, Tata Motors will deploy 16 hydrogen-powered trucks featuring various configurations and payload capacities, to thoroughly assess their performance and durability in actual freight operations.
These trucks will be rigorously tested on major logistics routes like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar where the feasibility of electric and hydrogen-powered solutions will be critically evaluated. This exploration into hydrogen power involves both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV) systems, ensuring a detailed analysis of their potential for extensive industrial use.
The trial lineup includes the Tata Prima H.55S prime movers â one equipped with a H2ICE and the other with a FCEV â alongside the Tata Prima H.28, an advanced H2ICE truck engineered for substantial tasks.
With their operational range extending from 300km to 500km, these trucks offer a sustainable and effective alternative for long-distance freight services, while also incorporating advanced manufacturing techniques, hydrogen propulsion technologies and enhanced driver-assistance safety features.
Tata Motors: Driving India toward a greener future
Tata Motors has established itself as a frontrunner in promoting sustainable vehicle production, highlighted by this trial which reinforces its commitment to developing cutting-edge transport solutions.
With a diverse portfolio of alternative-fuel vehicles, the company continues to foster innovation in green mobility.
Alongside its thrust in hydrogen technology, Tata Motors is making significant advances in EV manufacturing, thereby fortifying its role in the transition towards sustainable industrial transportation.
The integration of 15 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses into India’s public transport already exemplifies the practicality of zero-emission technology in large-scale operations.
By furthering these hydrogen truck trials, Tata Motors not only champions the development of next-generation propulsion systems but also substantially contributes to India's clean energy goals and the global climate agenda.
“Tata Motors is deeply honoured to be at the forefront of driving India’s transformation towards greener, smarter and sustainable mobility," says Girish Wagh. "As a company with a long-standing commitment to nation-building, we have continuously embraced innovation to develop mobility solutions that contribute to India’s growth and development.
"Today, with the commencement of these hydrogen truck trials, we are proud to further this legacy by pioneering the transition to clean, zero emission energy for long haul transportation.
"We are grateful to the Government of India for their visionary leadership in making this possible, and we remain committed to playing our part in building sustainable, future ready mobility solutions that will deliver better performance and efficiency.”
