Aramco, Carbon Clean & Samsung E&A collaborate to implement CycloneCC carbon capture tech, advancing scalable solutions for sustainability and net zero

Aramco is working in partnership with Carbon Clean and Samsung E&A to develop a groundbreaking carbon capture facility utilising Carbon Clean's CycloneCC technology.

This innovation is set to tackle CO₂ emissions efficiently by extracting them directly from the exhaust streams of natural gas turbines, which include about 4% CO₂.The introduction of this new climate technology represents a significant step forward.

CycloneCC is capable of capturing CO₂ concentrations from 3% to 20%, with a capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

With the usage of CycloneCC technology, the project aims to reduce the capital outlay for carbon capture systems by as much as 50% compared to traditional methods, all while maintaining high operational performance and efficiency.

About Aramco

Aramco stands as one of the world's most substantial integrated energy and chemicals companies.

This Saudi Arabian powerhouse not only contributes significantly to the global energy sector but also embeds sustainable practices across its operations.

With a keen eye on the net-zero transition, Aramco is invested in projects and innovations that address broad sustainability challenges.

"I am excited about this collaboration with Carbon Clean and Samsung to demonstrate this promising new technology in one of our facilities," says Ali A. Al-Meshari, Aramco’s Senior Vice President of Technology Oversight & Coordination.

Ali has been at Aramco for over two decades, overseeing their commute towards sustainable practices

"If successful, this demonstration will pave the way for the wider deployment of this technology with partners in the Kingdom and beyond."

Historically, Aramco has skilfully integrated renewable energy sources alongside its traditional oil and gas operations, optimising the use of hydrocarbons and fostering economic benefits.

In northwest Saudi Arabia, solar panels power unconventional gas wells, embodying the company’s commitment to harness every burst of solar energy efficiently.

Carbon Clean, a pioneering company in the carbon capture arena, offers innovative solutions designed to curb emissions in sectors where reduction has been most challenging, such as cement, steel, refineries and energy from waste.

With a solid track record spanning more than a decade — which includes 49 industrial carbon capture installations globally — Carbon Clean’s experience in designing, building and managing these systems is unparalleled.

CycloneCC's aptitude for capturing CO₂ efficiently, even at lower concentrations, comes from its innovative combination of rotating packed beds (RPBs) and Carbon Clean’s proprietary APBS-CDRMax solvent.

Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, says: “Aramco and Samsung Ventures are investors in Carbon Clean, so we’re proud to deepen our relationship through this partnership.

Aniruddha has been with Carbon Clean for 15 years, leading the revolutionary carbon capture systems.

"This first-of-a-kind deployment capturing very low concentrations of CO₂ is a key milestone in scaling up and commercialising CycloneCC.

"Its compact, modular design should be easily integrated with gas turbines, delivering high performance carbon capture in an industrial setting where space is typically limited.”

About Samsung E&A

Samsung E&A, a total solutions provider in the global energy sector, has completed more than 1,500 projects worldwide.

Samsung, known for its deep expertise across multiple domains, is entrusted with the engineering, procurement and construction aspects of the new carbon capture facility.

Cheon Hong Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Sustainable Solutions Division at Samsung E&A, says: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Aramco and Carbon Clean to advance their carbon reduction aims.

Cheon Hong has been with SAMSUNG E&A for over a decade, paving the way for enhanced carbon capture.

"This demonstration project is critical and aligns with our commitment to provide innovative solutions to reduce environmental footprints effectively.”

Together, Aramco, Carbon Clean and Samsung E&A are spearheading this pivotal climate tech initiative, setting the stage for broad-scale implementation and closer strides towards a sustainable global environment.
