Corvus Energy & the World's First All-Electric Offshore Boat

Corvus Energy, renowned for its innovative zero-emission solutions in the marine and offshore sectors, is at the forefront of a major technological leap.
The company is set to supply a substantial battery system for the world's first fully electric offshore vessel.
This vessel, a Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV), is being built at the Armon shipyard in Spain for the UK-based shipowner, Bibby Marine.
A new era for maritime operations
The eCSOV will be equipped with Corvus Energy's Blue Whale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), boasting nearly 25MWh of power.
This installation represents the largest ever Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery system used in a maritime venture, signifying an enormous advancement in the operational capacity of offshore vessels.
Pål Ove Husoy, VP of Sales at Corvus Energy, says: “A fully electric offshore vessel is something the industry has been working towards for a long time and marks a significant milestone in offshore vessel operations.
“This eCSOV will be the first offshore vessel that can operate fully electric for a full day and will set a new standard for future offshore vessels.
"The unique system design incorporating both battery power and dual-fuel methanol engines will significantly reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency while providing the reliability and performance needed for demanding offshore wind and renewable operations.”
Optimisation of power systems
In collaboration with the shipowner, the designer and the system integrator, Corvus Energy has fine-tuned the design and functionality to maximise system performance.
Unlike typical hybrid systems, the main power source for the eCSOV will be its expansive battery pack, with engines activated only for charging purposes at a steady, efficient load.
This method enhances efficiency, prolongs battery life and notably diminishes emissions.
This vessel will also incorporate a groundbreaking DC grid architecture to minimise power losses and guarantee seamless power management across operations.
A unique feature of this eCSOV will be its offshore charging capabilities, allowing the vessel to charge batteries while simultaneously maintaining Dynamic Positioning (DP) for precise location holding, a debut feature in the Service Operation Vessel (SOV) sector.
Advancing zero-emission maritime solutions
Corvus Energy's collaboration with Bibby Marine is paving the way for the widespread electrification of maritime operations.
Gavin Forward, New Build Director at Bibby Marine, highlighted the importance of this partnership: “We are excited to collaborate with Corvus on this pioneering eCSOV project, setting a new benchmark for sustainable offshore operations and driving the future of zero-emission vessel technology.”
He further highlighted Corvus Energy's credentials, saying Corvus was chosen “for its proven track record in delivering complex vessel projects, while the LFP battery chemistry was chosen for its alignment with our eCSOV’s operational profile, offering enhanced safety, longevity and reliability for a project that promises to accelerate the path to net-zero for the maritime sector”.
The project timeline is set with Corvus Energy delivering its battery systems to the shipyard in 2026, and the vessel slated to commence operations in 2027.
Once operational, the eCSOV will play a vital role in commissioning and managing offshore wind farms, further cementing the maritime sector's commitment to a zero-emissions future.
With this initiative, Corvus Energy and Bibby Marine are not only advancing energy efficiency and emissions reductions but also championing sustainable maritime innovation.
This project sets new standards and expectations for the future of offshore vessel technology, showcasing significant strides towards an environmentally sustainable maritime industry.
