SLB Capturi’s modular carbon capture plant uses innovative technology that’s transforming industrial emissions and accelerating decarbonisation

SLB is a giant of the energy technology sphere.

Formerly Schlumberger, SLB is both the world’s largest offshore drilling company and the world’s largest offshore drilling contractor by revenue.

As well as this, SLB provides technology for the likes of reservoir characterisation, production, drilling and processing to the oil and gas industry.

The company supplies its products and services to the industry, from exploration through production and integrated pipeline solutions for hydrocarbon recovery.

ā€œOur approach to carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration combines subsurface and surface solutions for an end-to-end partnership that provides a comprehensive solution for your carbon mitigation needs, managing the entire process from capturing COā‚‚ at the source to its permanent storage underground; essentially, a one-stop shop for all your CCUS requirements,ā€ SLB says.

Its joint venture with Aker Carbon Capture, SLB Capturi, is where a lot of SLB’s carbon capture focus is channelled through.

What is SLB Capturi?

SLB Capturi is a joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture.

It was launched in 2024 and not only brings carbon capture solutions to the market but has a  commitment to invest in R&D to ensure the future of cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving needs of industries worldwide.

“Our mission at SLB Capturi is to deliver impact at scale with carbon capture as a critical pathway to net zero,” says Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB Capturi.

Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB Capturi

ā€œWith our proven, cost-effective technologies and modular approach, we’re enabling industries to integrate carbon capture into their existing operations, driving significant carbon reduction and removal.ā€

Specialising in delivering innovative carbon reduction and removal solutions, SLB Capturi combines the two companies’ strengths to develop carbon capture and reduction solutions.

The joint venture boasts more than two decades of carbon capture experience and has more than 60,000 hours of operation behind it.

Leveraging its proven modular technologies, SLB Capturi enables industries to rapidly deploy carbon capture systems at scale, addressing both current opportunities and future requirements.

The company is constructing seven carbon capture plants across bioenergy, waste-to-energy and cement facilities.

SLB Capturi’s Just Catch modular carbon capture plant

SLB Capturi is handing over its modular carbon capture plant at Twence’s waste-to-energy facility.

Twence is a Netherlands-based sustainable energy supplier.

This plant will capture up to 100,000 metric tonnes of COā‚‚ each year annually at Twence’s site in Hengelo.

The carbon capture plant is based on SLB Capturi’s standard, modular Just Catch design.

ā€œWe are extremely proud of our collaboration with Twence to bring online the first modular carbon capture plant at a waste-to-energy facility,ā€ Egil says.

ā€œAs pressure mounts for industrials to reduce emissions and meet net zero targets, access to affordable, effective carbon capture technologies is more important than ever.

ā€œWe look forward to continuing our mission to enable access to the capture technologies needed to achieve COā‚‚ emissions reduction impact at scale."

But what happens to the COā‚‚ once captured?

SLB Capturi plans for it to be used in the horticulture and food and beverage sectors.

SLB Capturi’s standard, modular Just Catchā„¢ design reduces onsite installation and outfitting work.

This provides a more cost-efficient and easier-to-deploy option compared with other carbon capture alternatives.

ā€œWe are excited to see the successful completion of our new carbon capture plant,ā€ says Marc Kapteijn, CEO of Twence.

Marc Kapteijn, CEO of Twence

“This highly innovative and sustainable project was safely realised by a motivated and committed team and through intensive collaboration with SLB Capturi.

“In the spring, we will supply the first COā‚‚ to the greenhouse horticulture sector.

“We are convinced that this technology plays a crucial role in our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and realise our sustainability ambitions.”
