Schneider Electric's New US$51m Manufacturing Plant
Schneider Electric has announced a US$51m investment to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Scarborough, UK.
This is aimed at bolstering the UKās transition to clean energy while also setting new standards for sustainable manufacturing practices.
The upcoming facility will not only triple the size of Schneider Electric's existing Scarborough site but is also expected to generate more than 200 jobs, thereby providing a significant boost to local employment and fostering the development of green skills within the region.
Schneider Electric already has a low-carbon distribution hub in Scarborough, and the new manufacturing plant is set to become the centrepiece of Schneiderās operations in the area.
A blueprint for net zero manufacturing
Central to the new facility's operation is its commitment to achieving net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Scheduled for completion in early 2025, the site will utilise renewable energy sources alongside advanced energy efficiency measures to minimise its carbon footprint.
Schneider Electric plans to install a solar energy system that will satisfy 30% of the plant's energy requirements, with photovoltaic panels covering half of the buildingās roof area.
Any energy demands not met by onsite renewable sources will be fulfilled through "renewable certified" energy, ensuring the plant operates solely on sustainable energy.
The facility will also incorporate Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure platform, an intelligent Building Management System that significantly reduces energy wastage.
Features such as light sensors, automated heating and cooling systems and advanced energy monitoring are crucial in maintaining energy-efficient operations.
Additionally, the site will pioneer one of Europeās first fully electric paint lines, further reducing the carbon footprint of its manufacturing processes.
With aspirations for a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating, the project showcases Schneider Electricās commitment to setting new benchmarks for environmentally responsible construction in the industrial sector.
Kelly Becker, President of Schneider Electric UK & Ireland, emphasises the company's dedication to sustainability and innovation.
āSustainability is at the core of our purpose, culture and business,ā she says.
āWe're proud to be investing in and developing innovative solutions which will deliver immediate and lasting decarbonisation in the UK, while shoring up the creation of local, green jobs in Yorkshire.ā
Supporting biodiversity and sustainable transport
In addition to its efficient operations, the facility is designed with environmental preservation in mind.
Schneider Electric is working alongside Natural England to establish habitats for protected species and to preserve existing trees and natural features wherever possible, efforts that will enhance local biodiversity and integrate the facility into its surrounding environment seamlessly.
The site will also focus on sustainable transport solutions for its workforce.
Employees will benefit from 30 electric vehicle (EV) charging points and dedicated facilities for cyclists, including bike shelters and showers.
These initiatives underline the company's drive to embed sustainability into every aspect of its operations.
Stephen Phipson, Chief Executive of Make UK, says: āThis is a marvellous example of how sustainable manufacturing can be achieved, creating many highly skilled jobs in the process.
āGreen technologies are going to be the solution to many of the challenges that we face and Schneider should be applauded for pioneering this facility. It is an exemplar model for other manufacturers to follow when they build new facilities.ā
Bolstering the green economy in Yorkshire
Schneider Electric's expansion in Scarborough forms part of a wider investment strategy across Yorkshire, with an additional US$9m recently channelled into its Leeds site.
Collectively, these projects are set to create more than 300 jobs across the region over the next decade, strengthening Yorkshireās position as a hub for green manufacturing.
The Scarborough site will continue focusing on producing low-voltage switchgear, crucial for sustainable energy systems such as EV charging infrastructure and energy-efficient buildings.
Kelly believes that the new plant is a symbol of the company's long-term commitment to the UK's clean energy transition.
“The new facility in Scarborough represents a pillar of innovation in net zero, and one which will be an industry benchmark for the transition to sustainable, energy efficient buildings.”
