Google's $9bn investment strengthens South Carolina's role as a hub for digital and AI infrastructure, creating new opportunities in energy and technology

Google is set to invest US$9bn in South Carolina up to 2027, expanding its data centre infrastructure in one of its most substantial single-state technology commitments to date.

The move will help to strengthen the state’s role as a key hub in the US’s digital and AI infrastructure network and is expected to create new opportunities in the energy and technology industries.

The investment plan includes the expansion of Google’s existing Berkeley County data centre campus and will support the ongoing building of two more facilities in Dorchester County. These sites are set to improve Google's ability to provide AI-powered services, cloud computing and large-scale digital platforms.

The expansion could also ensure the resilience and sustainability of its infrastructure as the need for computational power grows.

Powering AI and cloud operations

Google's investment is a strategic decision to strengthen the foundation of its AI and cloud activities across the eastern US.

The new and expanded data centres are designed to house the high-density computing environments necessary for training and deploying advanced AI models while also supporting an increase in enterprise workloads.

Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer at Alphabet and Google, explains the scope of the investment.

“I am pleased to share that Google is investing US$9bn in South Carolina to expand our data centre infrastructure in the state, deliver programmes to protect energy affordability and train the local workforce for careers in the state’s growing tech and energy sector,” Ruth says.

“This investment helps support job growth in South Carolina as it benefits from the upside of AI. Google is proud to build on our 15 years of work in the Palmetto State to help secure its success during the next wave of American innovation," she adds.

Ruth’s comments speak to the growing importance of South Carolina in Google’s US data infrastructure strategy.

Since establishing its first data centre in the state in 2007, Google has made substantial investments in energy efficiency and digital transformation initiatives.

Developing a skilled workforce

A central component of the investment is its focus on workforce training and energy affordability.

Through a new Google.org grant to the Electrical Training Alliance (etA), Google will help integrate AI tools into the alliance’s curriculum.

This programme aims to prepare over 160 apprentices for careers in South Carolina’s expanding technology and energy sectors.

By working with regional training groups and community partners, Google intends to build pathways to skilled, sustainable careers that will support the broader AI and data infrastructure ecosystem.

Google's investment is also intended to support local initiatives focused on energy accessibility and environmental management as the scale of data centres increases.

The expansion is anticipated to create many jobs in both construction and operations, reinforcing Google’s commitment to the state where it already supports thousands of indirect jobs through its services and programmes.

Sustainable digital infrastructure

Sustainability is a core principle of Google's data centre operations globally, including its facilities in South Carolina.

Google reports that it has been carbon neutral since 2007 and has a goal to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

The firm expects that its new facilities in the state will follow this path by incorporating renewable power sources and advanced cooling systems to reduce water consumption.

Crucially, the state’s expanding renewable energy portfolio should offer a solid basis for this growth.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, Google’s expansion will be crucial in advancing its AI objectives.

The new data centres will provide the power needed for developing generative AI models, enhancing cloud services for business clients and ensuring secure high-performance computing for new digital services.

This investment signals Google’s confidence in South Carolina’s capacity to be a long-term anchor for its AI and cloud ecosystem.
