Working toward its 100% renewable energy goal, one of Aggreko’s US service centres is now almost completely operating on entirely on renewable energy

Making the shift to renewable energy is no mean feat.

But by generating 258kWh of the 279kWh it typically needs, Aggreko is — for the first time — powering one of its US service centres almost completely on renewable energy.

The global leader in energy solutions expects the new solar panels installed at its New Orleans service centre will provide green power that meets 92% of the facility’s power needs.

“Having service centres powered by renewable energy is a central part of Aggreko’s sustainability drive, and the New Orleans facility’s success with solar represents real progress in reaching our sustainable energy goals,” says Todd Aston, Vice President of ESG at Aggreko.

“Our Energizing Change campaign represents how, as an energy solutions company, we’re not only focused on building greener solutions for our customers — we’re also determined to be an example in the industry of how to transition to a greener future.

“Now, customers in Greater New Orleans visiting our service centre can see for themselves how Aggreko is striving for sustainability.”

This shift does not just have sustainability in mind.

By moving to renewable power, Aggreko expects to make a saving of almost US$24,000 a year in electricity costs alone.

As a result, 4,036 tonnes of carbon emissions will be offset over a two-decade period — the equivalent of 9.2 million car miles.

Aggreko says it chose the New Orleans site to pilot this scale of solar roofing installation thanks to its high solar potential.

As well as this, the area's severe weather causes frequent power outages — “and an independent power source means the New Orleans facility can continue operations even if weather interrupts grid power”, Aggreko says.

But it's not just its own operations Aggreko is making greener.

By working with Formula 1, Aggreko will deliver innovative low-carbon energy systems at all European Grands Prix from this year.

This aligns with the traditionally carbon-intensive sport’s ambitious goal of achieving net zero by 2030.

Outside of international sport, Aggreko’s research aids the energy industry through a multitude of challenges, picking out barriers when it comes to areas like the adoption of greener technologies.

For example, its Race to Renewables study found that of 855 offshore wind professionals across Europe surveyed, 39% identified the lack of temporary power solutions as the primary barrier to growth.

“The wind sector must look at the barriers that are stopping greener technologies being used, alongside the issues around securing power for projects,” says Michel Maaskant, Sector Sales Specialist for Offshore Renewables at Aggreko.

On top of this, it advises the energy sector to ensure its short- and long-term prosperity.

Back in 2023, it advised the sector — as well as those involved in manufacturing for energy — to consider short to mid-term decentralised energy solutions as an effective means of maintaining business continuity.

“At a time when maintaining profitability is more critical than ever, it’s imperative that UK manufacturers take productivity into their own hands,” says Ruth Martin, UK Manufacturing Sector Expert at Aggreko.

“For manufacturers with aspirations of expansion, short-term decentralised energy solutions are an effective method of bridging the gap before a grid connection can be established.”
