Iberdrola: Behind The World's Leading Sustainable R&D Giant

Iberdrola, a global leader in the energy sector, has been recognised as the top private utility for Research and Development (R&D).
Also Sustainability Magazine's most sustainable company of 2024, Iberdrola has been recognised for its consistent leadership in R&D, a position it has proudly also held in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
The Spanish energy giant's impressive feat was first highlighted in the European Commission's 2024 Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, which assesses more than 2,000 major global corporations.
In 2023 alone, Iberdrola allocated approximately US$411m to R&D, focusing on pioneering sustainable energy solutions.
Under the leadership of Chairman Ignacio GalĂĄn, the company champions innovation as "the main tool for guaranteeing the sustainability, efficiency and competitiveness of the electricity company".
Iberdrola's ambitious five-year roadmap
Iberdrola plans to double its R&D investments to more than US$4.3 billion by 2030.
These funds will primarily support advancements in renewable energy, smart grids, digital transformation and tailor-made consumer solutions.
The company's commitment to accelerating electrification extends beyond addressing the climate crisis.
âThis seeks to accelerate electrification, addressing not only the climate crisis, but also improving energy security, competitiveness and sustainable job creation throughout the value chain,â Iberdrola says.
These investments underline Iberdrola's broader goal to decarbonise the energy sector while ensuring reliable, long-term energy access.
By integrating cutting-edge, clean technologies, Iberdrola is playing a crucial role in the global transition towards renewable energy.
Leading the charge in global energy innovation
At the heart of Iberdrola's innovation efforts is the Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub in Bilbao, Spain.
This facility serves as an international reference point, combining Iberdrola's technological prowess with the expertise of more than 100 collaborators, including suppliers, universities, tech centres and start-ups.
The hub actively seeks solutions to various challenges posed by global electrification and plays a vital role in boosting the worldwide energy ecosystem.
By integrating digitalisation and artificial intelligence into its energy distribution networks, Iberdrola is enhancing the security and quality of its energy supply, contributing significantly to the ongoing energy transition.
Iberdrola says the hub sets âan international benchmarkâ and is a âdriving force for innovationâ, with Iberdrola saying this approach will help âincrease security and quality of supplyâ.
Advancing renewable energy and new technologies
Focusing intensively on renewable energy storage, Iberdrola champions pumped hydroelectric storage, known as the most mature large-scale energy storage solution.
One of Iberdrola's key projects in this sector is the Tâmega gigabattery in Portugal, a landmark energy storage initiative in Europe.
Additionally, Iberdrola is scaling up its offshore wind energy projects in the UK, France and Germany, exploring deeper waters to maximise wind energy potential.
The firm is also advancing in green hydrogen production â considered a complex but crucial energy resource â demonstrating its commitment and capability in pioneering futuristic energy solutions.
Fostering talent and technological advancement
The Innovation and Training Campus in San AgustĂn del Guadalix, near Madrid, symbolises Iberdrola's commitment to upskilling nearly 13,000 people annually.
This campus is more than just a training facility; it's a global hub for knowledge, innovation and employability, ensuring that creativity and collaboration are at the forefront of Iberdrola's operational ethos.
Through these concerted efforts, Iberdrola not only asserts its leadership in energy transitions but also addresses wider economic and social challenges, reflecting its belief that sustainability, efficiency and competitiveness are inherently interconnected.
