These investments underline Iberdrola's broader goal to decarbonise the energy sector while ensuring reliable, long-term energy access.

By integrating cutting-edge, clean technologies, Iberdrola is playing a crucial role in the global transition towards renewable energy.

Leading the charge in global energy innovation

At the heart of Iberdrola's innovation efforts is the Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub in Bilbao, Spain.

This facility serves as an international reference point, combining Iberdrola's technological prowess with the expertise of more than 100 collaborators, including suppliers, universities, tech centres and start-ups.

The hub actively seeks solutions to various challenges posed by global electrification and plays a vital role in boosting the worldwide energy ecosystem.

By integrating digitalisation and artificial intelligence into its energy distribution networks, Iberdrola is enhancing the security and quality of its energy supply, contributing significantly to the ongoing energy transition.

Iberdrola says the hub sets â€œan international benchmark” and is a “driving force for innovation”, with Iberdrola saying this approach will help “increase security and quality of supply”.

Advancing renewable energy and new technologies

Focusing intensively on renewable energy storage, Iberdrola champions pumped hydroelectric storage, known as the most mature large-scale energy storage solution.

One of Iberdrola's key projects in this sector is the Tâmega gigabattery in Portugal, a landmark energy storage initiative in Europe.
