Celebrating its 55th year, Earth Day 2025 unites one billion people to champion clean energy and climate action under the theme Our Power, Our Planet

On Tuesday 22 April 2025, more than a billion people across more than 190 countries are expected to unite for the 55th anniversary of Earth Day — a global movement now recognised as the world’s largest secular observance.

This year’s theme, Our Power, Our Planet, underscores the urgent need to accelerate the global transition to renewable energy.

With the ambitious goal of tripling clean electricity generation by 2030, Earth Day 2025 places a renewed focus on the deployment of solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal and geothermal power — essential drivers of climate security and energy resilience.

Reflecting on Earth Day 2024

Last year’s Earth Day, themed Planet vs. Plastics, spotlighted the environmental and health risks of plastic pollution.

Advocates called for a 60% cut in plastic production by 2040 and urged a phase-out of single-use plastics.

The campaign prompted widespread calls for action, encouraging governments and companies to invest in sustainable packaging, circular economy models and robust waste infrastructure.

This momentum now feeds into a wider agenda — advancing clean energy access and climate resilience through technological and policy innovation.

Since its origin in 1970, Earth Day has remained a defining moment in environmental action.

What started as a US-based anti-pollution movement led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and key laws such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.

The Brayton Point Power Station in Massachusetts discharged heated water to Mount Hope Bay until 2011

Now a truly global event, Earth Day brings together individuals, communities, industries and policymakers in a united effort to preserve ecosystems, curb emissions and create a sustainable energy future.

Earth Day 2025

This year’s initiatives reflect the scale and urgency of the climate and energy crisis.

Events include:

  • Community clean-ups in urban, rural and coastal zones
  • Live educational programmes, including the BBC’s school rainforest expedition
  • Advocacy campaigns calling for stronger energy policies and renewables investment
  • Sustainability fairs and workshops promoting low-carbon living and energy literacy

These efforts aim to promote energy awareness, encourage responsible consumption and spark engagement in building a decarbonised energy system.

“Earth Day is the cornerstone of my year, and this year, Italy represents the perfect backdrop for a message of unity around the critically important subject of energy,” explains Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG

Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG

“We will demonstrate that renewable energy transcends political divides. Embracing it delivers multiple benefits simultaneously: strengthening the global economy, creating millions of new jobs, enhancing energy independence and improving affordability for both businesses and citizens alike.

“On top of that, it benefits human health and the health of the planet. This is not about politics – it is about pragmatic solutions that benefit us all. Which is why this is such a unique gathering of political, economic, faith and industry leaders.”

Corporate climate and energy commitments

A growing number of businesses are aligning Earth Day with energy transition goals:

  • Starbucks aims to certify 10,000 Greener Stores by 2025 and halve emissions by 2030
  • Apple has reduced its carbon footprint by 45% since 2015 and targets carbon neutrality across all products by 2030
  • NASA is using satellite data to monitor Earth’s climate and support renewable energy research
  • ASICS has introduced an eco-collection built around circular design and recycled materials
  • Target is designing all own-brand products for a circular future by 2040
  • Leidos and Lowe’s are investing in rooftop solar and smart grid systems
  • Sony, Kohler, Yum! Brands and McDonald’s are expanding sustainable sourcing and biodiversity strategies.

Getting involved

Earth Day is for everyone. You can take part by:

  • Joining local clean-up or planting events and energy awareness workshops
  • Supporting policies that accelerate the transition to renewables
  • Choosing brands committed to low-carbon operations and circular practices
  • Educating others on the energy-climate connection

Whether it’s advocating for solar access, choosing clean energy at home or backing sustainable policy, every action helps steer the planet towards a greener path.

Earth Day 2025 is more than a commemoration — it is a rallying cry to harness our collective energy.

By tripling renewable energy generation and embedding sustainable habits into daily life, we can build a cleaner, fairer and more secure energy future for generations to come.
